Aqueous coatings have been in use by commercial packaging professionals for nearly three decades. As the demand for aqueous coatings grows, print technologies become more advanced. Three common print technologies are used to print aqueous coatings. They are flexographic, gravure and offset printing. Aqueous coating vs. traditional overprint. Binders and additives coating paper and board. Our primary focus is bringing cost optimization and improved appearance and functionality to our customers. We understand the challenges that come with a changing market and our products provide answers to today’s market demands for coated paper and board.
• Aqueous Coating: a water-based coating applied by a printing press to protect and/or enhance a printed piece. • Backbone: the back of a bound book connecting the two covers; also called a spine. • Basis Weight: the weight in pounds of a ream ( sheets) of paper cut to a given standard size for that grade; e.g., sheets of 25”x38”, lb. coated book paper weigh 80 pounds. Printing Lingo: What is Aqueous Coating? Aqueous Coating is a popular type of clear top coat applied to printed pieces, such as brochures and flyers. It helps protect the ink and paper against scuffs, abrasions and smudges. In addition to protection, Aqueous Coating enhances the appearance of printed pieces by providing some sheen, which in turn helps make colors appear more .
Aqueous Coating (aka AQ) is an environmentally friendly water-based coating applied to your printed piece. It’s applied on press during the printing process and has two purposes. 1. It protects the piece against scuffing, which is very helpful if you have heavy ink coverage. 2. AQ stands for Aqueous Coating. This is a clear liquid that can be applied to offset printed sheets. The coating provides some protection from scuffs, dirt and smudges. Primarily AQ coating is used to enhance the look of a piece. There are many types of AQ. The most common are: Dull, Gloss, Satin, Pencil/Pen Receptive.

80# Text [aqueous coated] UV Coating 90+ Because aqueous coatings "add" to the gloss of the paper, one cannot predict the gloss of the finished job without first knowing the gloss of the stock. Often you will find that the higher the stock's gloss, the higher. Different Types of AQ (Aqueous) Coating.
Gloss: If you’re looking for a less showy and more muted gloss finish, AQ coating is an ideal a high gloss, UV coating or film laminates are better options. Matte: Consider matte coating for minimal shine and depth but a high degree of color. Satin: With an appearance that’s between gloss and matte, satin offers medium shine and.
Paper Coating Technology. The course is designed for coating mill production and engineering personnel, mill operators, technical service personnel, product developers, and research & development personnel employed by chemical manufacturers.
Increased knowledge of printing methods used to print coated grades of paper and board, the. The Future of Functional and Barrier Coatings for Paper and Board to offers five-year global market forecasts for functional and barrier coatings for paper and board packaging segmented by end use and geographic region.
For more information, download the brochure. There are two main reasons for applying a coating to paper or board; to provide resistance to grease, oil or water, and to enhance appearance. It is recommended for use in paper and paperboard coatings where a high degree of grease, oil and water resistance is needed, along with good flexibility.
Foremost, aqueous coated paper and paper board is, sustainable, biodegradable, compostable, recyclable, and repulpable (without hydro-pulping). Furthermore, aqueous coatings can be applied off-line or in-line, giving control to the printer to create a substrate designed to satisfy an.
speed coating and use of current aqueous coating technologies at paper mills to enable on-line coating. The above mentioned characteristics of aqueous polyolefin dispersions and their application benefits allow the use of these products in various applications in paper and board and especially in packaging and specialty paper grades.
to relate the gluing performance of the coated board to the coating structure development caused by the differing application techniques. For aqueous glues the mechanism of setting and bond formation necessitates that the glue dewaters, with the aqueous mobile phase being able to penetrate through the coating layers and enter the fibre matrix.
All of our coatings we apply are Aqueous, meaning they are clear, fast-drying water based coating. Inks are sealed on the paper when coating is applied. The coating acts as a barrier between the ink and the world outside.
Whether the aqueous coating is Gloss, Satin, or Soft Touch it protects the piece, allowing our bindery team to handle sooner.
paper coating pigment is combined with polymeric binder, organic solvent and rheological modifier to form a uniform, high-solids, water free coating composition of controllable rheology which may be appliied to paper, film or web material to produce a smooth coated product with superior properities.
Folding Carton Board (FCB) Product Design for Aqueous Gluing The binders used in coating formulations for folding carton products have an enormous impact on aqueous gluing performance.
Polyvinyl Acetate (PVAc) synthetic polymers have been the choice for many years. Handbook For Pulp and Paper Technologists (The SMOOK Book), Fourth Edition. The cellulosic fibers are the main base material for the production of paper or board in paper industry, but cellulose can also act as a coating material for paper applications.
However, it is difficult to use it in native form because of its hydrophilic nature, insolubility in water (poor film-forming) and high crystallinity. — Paper Coating Types — Paper Coatings - UV, Aqueous and Varnish Coatings Used in Commercial Printing. Whether it's applied by a printer or a finisher, the right protective coating or laminate can keep your printing project looking professional.
Even though protection may be necessary on a marketing piece it is often overlooked. Aqueous Coatings Probably the number one advantage of aqueous coating is the cost savings you can achieve – especially in sheet-fed applications. Aqueous coatings are very user-friendly when additional finishing is necessary as well.
They work efficiently over most printing process inks, wet over wet or in some cases, wet over dry. This guide is intended as an aid to help you solve problems in the pressroom with aqueous coatings.
The aqueous coating products being sold today are vastly improved from those of even a few years ago, but the process of applying a water-based coating over wet litho ink must be. Ink-Based Printing Process – Ink soaks into paper while toner sits on top. Aqueous and UV coatings – We offer matte and gloss UV, as well as soft-touch, gloss, and satin aqueous for our offset printed products.
Less susceptible to cracking – Ink is thin and flexible, and may be less prone to cracking in high coverage folds. Aqueous Coatings. The coating improves durability and doesn't crack or scuff easily. Aqueous coating is also environmentally friendly, because it is a clear, fast-drying water-based coating.
A .Paper with a coating is smooth and shiny while uncoated paper is flat with little or no shine. Gloss stock makes colors look smoother, deeper, richer, with great color-contrast. Photo's and graphics tend to look better on gloss stock, while text heavy documents and artwork are often use matte stock.Q Series – Gloss Work and Turn Coatings.
The Q series for two-sided application is available in a wide variety of gloss finishes, drying speeds and slip characteristics. Most formulations in this series allow for over-coating of UV coating, oil based varnishes and aqueous coatings, permitting spot coating.
